A 25-year-old man from Hammond, Louisiana has pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to the sexual exploitation of minors. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Joseph Authement admitted to receiving materials that involved the sexual exploitation of minors on December 18, 2025, which could lead to a sentence ranging from five to twenty years in prison.

The case against Authement was bolstered by an investigation from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which executed a search warrant and seized Authement's iPhone on March 12, 2024. On the device, agents found images and videos depicting minors in sexually exploitive situations, and determined that Authement had used the messaging app Telegram to download and purchase child sex abuse materials. He now faces, a hefty fine of up to $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, a minimum of five years supervised release which could extend to life after prison, and a $100 special assessment fee.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the sentencing is scheduled for March 19, 2025, before the United States District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo. Authement's guilty plea contributes to the ongoing efforts of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice started in May 2006, aiming to tackle the challenge of child exploitation and abuse.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office expressed appreciation for the support of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Rio Grande Valley Child Exploitation Investigations Task Force, in bringing this case to a point of prosecution. The Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba, Chief of the Financial Crimes Unit, is handling the prosecution, emphasizing the collaborative effort to combat and prosecute internet-based exploitation of children.
