An inmate identified as 65-year-old Anthony Thomas has died after experiencing what was described as an unspecified medical emergency within the confines of the Harris County Jail cellblock. According to ABC13, Thomas was pronounced dead on Saturday afternoon at approximately 1:47 p.m.
The death of Thomas marks the latest in what has been a troubling year for the Harris County Jail, with ten deaths reported thus far in 2024, as per information obtained by the Houston Chronicle. An autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has been scheduled to determine the precise cause of death, though results were pending at the time of reporting. The Houston Police Department is investigating the incident, as required by state law following any death in jail custody. Additionally, an internal investigation is underway by the sheriff's office to assess compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.
Thomas, who had been detained since May on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, had a documented medical history including treatment for fluid retention-related health issues and a diagnosis of schizophrenia, according to court documents. His medical issues had previously led to an incident at St. Luke's Patients Medical Center, where Thomas reportedly threatened a nurse with a knife upon trying to leave the hospital against medical advice.
Historically, the trends in inmate deaths within the Harris County Jail have raised concerns. Before the ten deaths this year, 2023 saw 19 deaths, with 13 attributed to natural causes. This was a slight decrease from the 27 inmates who died in 2022.
