In a recent gathering on the Kohala Coast, Officer Severo Ines Jr. was honored by the Hawai‘i Island Safety and Security Professionals Association (HISSPA) as Officer of the Quarter. The ceremony, held on November 15, lauded the South Kohala Patrol Officer for his unwavering commitment to traffic safety on Hawai‘i Island roads. HISSPA recognized Officer Ines for arresting a dozen motorists clocked driving at harrowing speeds over 100 miles-per-hour, as reported by Nixle.
This year, Officer Ines's efforts in traffic law enforcement lead to a striking number of speeding citations and notable arrests. As per an announcement obtained by HISSPA, he issued hundreds of citations and arrested 18 individuals for excessive speeding—defined as driving more than 30 miles-per-hour over the speed limit. Among these arrests, a disconcerting 12 motorists were apprehended while traveling at speeds at or exceeding the 100 miles-per-hour mark. The highest speed recorded during this period was an alarming 134 miles per hour, displaying a clear disregard for public safety and traffic regulations.
The actions of Officer Ines are credited with playing a vital role in preventing accidents and preserving lives on the island's roadways. His vigilance in curbing dangerous driving habits ensures that the roads are safer for both residents and visitors of Hawai'i Island. Excessive speeding, as it stands, poses a significant peril to all who share the road.
Reflecting on Officer Ines's accolade, Captain Roylen Valera praised the officer's commitment at the HISSPA ceremony. "We applaud Officer Ines in his dedication to roadway safety," he remarked. The organization also took this opportunity to remind the public about travel safety, especially during a holiday season, which is known for increased travel, errands, and festivities that could tempt drivers to speed. "Roadway safety is everyone's responsibility," Valera asserted, reminding that even during the festive rush, safety should not be compromised, as reported by Nixle.
