A high-speed pursuit on North Carolina roadways culminated in a violent confrontation when Herman Eugene Williams Jr., fled from law enforcement, resulting in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer and injuries to two state troopers, sources say; the incident unfolded yesterday afternoon in Alexander County. Williams was subsequently airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries following his crash into two patrol cars and a tractor-trailer, according to WSOC-TV.
The chase began when troopers attempted to pull over a speeding Jeep Liberty driven by Williams, 41, of Statesville, NC, on US 64 near the Iredell and Alexander County line around 4 p.m.; the suspect did not comply, speeding off and instigating the pursuit that soon escalated, causing Williams to lose control and strike patrol cars as he maneuvered back onto the road, WBTV reported.
In their pursuit, troopers executed multiple precision immobilization techniques (PIT) in a bid to stop the Jeep, ultimately driving the suspect into a private driveway, where according to a statement obtained by WCCB Charlotte, Williams rammed the patrol vehicles again before re-entering the roadway where the chase continued; with another officer joining the pursuit, Williams eventually crossed the center line and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, leading to the Jeep's impact with the second trooper’s vehicle.
Tractor-trailer driver Clayton Herman recounted the harrowing incident to WSOC-TV, saying "Really, there wasn’t no reaction time. All you could do was brace for impact" after being preemptively informed by his fiancee about the ongoing chase, the driver also indicated during the ordeal authorities witnessed Williams consuming alcohol. Sgt. Daniel Hall, who spoke with the channel, described the event as "super, super dangerous," not just because of the alcohol but also because Williams "was wide open."
Both injured troopers were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries while the driver of the tractor-trailer remained uninjured; as the North Carolina Highway Patrol conducted an extensive on-scene investigation that closed Old Mountain Road for several hours, it emerged that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the collision, with charges against Williams pending.
