As temperatures in Hillsborough County are predicted to plummet below a chilling 40 degrees tonight, local shelters are gearing up to welcome individuals in need of a warm refuge. The Hillsborough County Cold Weather Shelter program is sparking to life, providing shelter for the homeless and those without adequate heat at home, according to Hillsborough County website.
Anticipating a surge in demand, with facilities' capacities severely capped, those in need are being encouraged to initially seek warmth with friends, and family. Residents have a narrow window from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight to secure shelter, before doors close or shelters hit their maximum occupancy.
The county is collaborating with multiple local organizations to ensure that accommodations are as accessible as possible. Three notable locations opening their doors tonight include the Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park, Hyde Park United Methodist Church, and Tampa Bay Mission of Hope in Valrico. These shelters stress that space is strictly allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Families with children are not left in the cold, as Metropolitan Ministries steps forward, distributing a constrained number of motel vouchers. Pre-registration for these vouchers is essential and can be achieved by calling (813) 209-1176 before 5 p.m. this evening. Regardless, of the inevitable rush, accommodations for adults flying solo are equally pressing.
Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park, prominently located at 107 S. Oregon Ave., is one of the participating facilities. Similarly, Hyde Park United Methodist Church joins the effort with open doors at 500 W. Platt St. The Tampa Bay Mission of Hope at 212 S. St. Cloud Ave., Building A, widens the net in Valrico for those seeking sanctuary.
With a clear aim of community service, Hillsborough County is still searching for more partners to shore up the shelter program. Interested organizations are encouraged to reach out to Israel Segarra, Chief Buyer for the Procurement Services Department, via email at [email protected], to join in this vital effort.
