In Austin, Texas, a new chapter unfolded for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) as Freeman F. Martin took command in a ceremony attended by state notables and law enforcement personnel. The first Texas Ranger in history to fill the role, Martin accepted his new mantle as the 14th Director of DPS, according to an announcement on the department's website.
With heavyweights like Governor Greg Abbott and various PSC commissioners in attendance, Martin vowed to not only maintain but also to elevate the state's public safety standards in face of escalating threats. “Today, Texas faces the most significant public safety and homeland security threats of our entire lifetime—and addressing those threats is no small task,” Martin said, as stated bt the Texas Department of Public Safety. His three-decade tenure with DPS, evolving from a Trooper to Senior Deputy Director, arms him with rich experience to tackle the agency’s multifaceted challenges.
Governor Abbott extolled Martin’s dedication to law enforcement and the rule of law, emphasizing his readiness to uphold Texas as a law-and-order state. “Freeman Martin brings an extraordinary wealth of experience to this position,” Abbott praised during the ceremony, as per the DPS. His sentiment mirrored that of PSC Chairman Steven P. Mach who highlighted Martin's deep connection with the heart of the agency and its workforce. The ceremony also featured a symbolic DPS flag exchange, underscoring the formal transfer of leadership from outgoing Director Steven McCraw to Martin.
Director Martin's assumption of his role signifies more than a change in personnel; it underlines a strategic continuity in Texas' approach to public safety and homeland security. With Martin at the helm, the DPS promises to make concerted efforts to fortify the safety of Texans across the state. Amidst a backdrop of growing security concerns, the new Director pledged to leverage the collective talent and know-how of over 11,000 DPS members to significantly advance the agency's mission. “As Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, it’s my job to make Texas safer and make the department better—and with the talent that we have across our state at every level, we will make that happen,” Martin asserted, as per the DPS announcement.
