Houston is moving forward with plans to expand micro-transit services through a partnership with Evolve Houston. METRO will add more small, electric on-demand vehicles to better serve neighborhoods like Second Ward, Third Ward, and downtown, where traditional bus and rail services may not be as effective due to urban challenges, as stated by CW39.

The new METRONow services aim to improve public transit and residents' quality of life. Operated by Evolve's free ride program, which recently received over $1 million in funding, the service will run from August to January. Mayor John Whitmire emphasized, "Connected communities are safer communities and bringing microtransit to Houston builds on my promise for smart, fiscally sound infrastructure growth." The micro-transit vehicles are designed for short trips and connect people to important places like transit centers, grocery stores, and medical facilities. "Integrating micro-transit into METRO’s public transit system demonstrates a commitment to finding innovative solutions that meet our customers where they are," said Metro Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock, according to Houston Chronicle.

Evolve's approach has received positive feedback, and more zones are expected to be added next year. Executive Director Casey Brown shared that the goal is to expand micro-transit across Houston. "Our micro-transit service is a game-changer for connecting people, and we are thrilled to launch it in downtown Houston," Brown said in a report by CW39. The all-electric, on-demand service works alongside METRO's fixed routes to provide more efficient and convenient short trips for residents.
