Following months of investigation, Houston police have arrested in connection with the March death of a juvenile, with the suspect now facing charges. The incident occurred at a residence located at 704 East 32nd Street, where the deceased, a 16-year-old female named Nayeli Perez, was found unresponsive. Authorities were called to the scene around 7:45 p.m. on March 25th, according to a news release from the Houston Police Department (HPD).
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Tracy Gonzales, reportedly acted as the caretaker for Ms. Perez. Gonzales has been charged with injury to a disabled person causing serious bodily injury, in the 488th State District Court. In the wake of the arrest, a booking photo of Gonzales was circulated to the public.
When first responders arrived on a fateful evening in March, they encountered a most grievous scene: Ms. Perez was discovered in her bedroom, evidently succumbed to injuries of an undetermined nature at the time. The HPD Homicide Division, including Sergeant C. Lamont and Detective A. Herrera, launched an immediate investigation. After an evaluation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, Ms. Perez's untimely passing was classified as a homicide, per the initial reporting by HPD.
It took several months for detectives to piece together the unfortunate events leading to Nayeli Perez's death, during which Gonzales emerged as a key figure and, ultimately, the accused. She was apprehended by authorities on Monday, barely a day shy of the year's end. The case will proceed through the legal system where the charges will be addressed, culminating in a setting where justice, for the young Ms. Perez, might finally be etched.
