Houston is experiencing patchy morning fog and expects temperatures to reach the mid-70s. The National Weather Service predicts warm days ahead, with scattered showers later in the week. The city is close to breaking its all-time heat record, with temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above normal for mid-December. Unless a cold front arrives, 2024 could be Houston’s warmest year on record.
The Houston Chronicle reports that this year's average temperatures have risen, with highs of 83.3°F and lows of 63.9°F, for an overall average of 73.6°F. This has surpassed last year’s average by a small margin, with today marking a significant point. The year has seen consistent warmth, with few dips in January and July, leading to a potential record-breaking year.
Looking ahead, residents can expect patchy fog and partially sunny skies. A cold front is expected to arrive on Wednesday, which could bring cooler temperatures, potentially shifting from 70s to 60s. Thunderstorms may also occur as the cold front moves through.
After the cold front, temperatures are expected to dip into the 40s at night and reach the 60s during the day, bringing a seasonally cool change that will last through the weekend, offering a sharp contrast to the year’s typical warmth.
