Big changes are coming to Houston's area code system, with a new kid on the block scheduled to arrive in January 2025. Beginning January 23, residents may find themselves dialing or being assigned the fresh series of digits, 621, as part of the city's expanding telephone needs, as detailed on a report by Chron.
Houston, a rapidly growing city spreading across 10 counties and most of Harris County, is expanding its communication networks. The Texas Public Utility Commission had warned that Houston could run out of phone numbers by the end of 2025, but the new 621 area code should help prevent this. With Harris County's population nearing 4.8 million, the demand for more numbers reflects the area's continued growth.
The famous quartet of 281, 346, 713, and 832, which have been synonymous with the Greater Houston area, will now be joined by the 621 area code. But fear not, as there are no significant disruptions expected for locals. "All five area codes will service the same locations," as mentioned in The Houston Chronicle report.
According to Chron, Consolidated Communications highlighted in a release the operability amidst this transition: "Beginning January 23, 2025, customers in the 281/346/713/832 area code overlay region may be assigned a number in the new 621 area code when they request new service or an additional line." Local calls will still require 10 digits, and call costs will remain the same. AT&T has confirmed that current local calls will still be considered local after the 621 area code is added.
Governor Greg Abbott championed the state's progress, declaring in 2023, "Houston—and all of Texas—continues to grow because our state offers freedom and opportunity that cannot be found anywhere else in the world," as per a Chron report.
