A Jacksonville school crossing guard was taken into custody in connection to a hit-and-run incident that occurred on Sunday and left a pedestrian in critical condition. Carolyn Bacon, 57, has been working as a part-time school crossing guard with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) before her arrest on charges including hit-and-run with serious injuries and evidence tampering.
According to the First Coast News, the incident took place around 11 a.m. at the crossroad of Edgewood Avenue North and New Kings Road. Witnesses at the scene described the car involved and provided a potential license plate number, leading officers to Bacon's residence where a car matching the description was found. In the aftermath of her arrest, Bacon resigned from her position, having begun her work with the JSO in March 2018.
Details provided by News4Jax indicate that the victim of the crash was promptly taken to the hospital with severe injuries. JSO found the vehicle that was suspected to be involved in the hit-and-run at the suspect's home, which corroborated witness statements regarding the incident.
Further information was shared by Action News Jax, stating that witnesses saw a Nissan sedan, which the driver did not pull over after the collision. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department attended to the victim before his transportation to a medical facility. Carolyn Bacon's tenure as a crossing guard has ceased following her detainment and subsequent resignation.
