In a move setting the pace for the year ahead, Renton City Councilmember James Alberson, Jr. has been elected to preside over the city's council meetings as the City Council President for 2025. The announcement came through at Monday's regular council meeting, as reported by the City of Renton's official news update. Elected to his seat in 2021, Alberson has accumulated experience as Council President Pro Tempore in 2024 and will now steer meetings and the agenda for the upcoming year.
Serving his first term on the council, Alberson, a Purdue University-educated business owner and consultant, is no stranger to leadership roles. Before taking his seat on the council in 2022, Alberson was deeply entrenched in Renton's civic life, including a stint as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Renton. With a long track record of community involvement, he has chaired the Renton Chamber of Commerce and led his homeowners' association for over 15 years, according to information found on the City of Renton's website.
In addition to his new duties as Council President, Alberson's plate is full with several other responsibilities. He chairs the Community Services Committee and holds vice-chair positions, among them the Planning & Development and Utilities Committees. Furthermore, in 2025, he will stake the helm at the Renton Regional Fire Authority Governance Board. His participation extends beyond local governance, however, with seats on varied executive boards and committees such as the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board and the South County Area Transportation Board.
Further burnishing his credentials, Alberson has achieved a Certificate of Municipal Leadership, a reflection of his dedication to the community and its governance. This accolade, as detailed by the City of Renton announcement, came in recognition of over 30 hours of training, including workshops on diversity, equity & inclusion, and showcasing at least six months of community service on statewide commissions.
Meanwhile, Councilmember Ruth Pérez stands poised as the new President Pro Tempore for the 2025 calendar year. Pérez, breaking ground as the first Latina and immigrant to sit on Renton's City Council, has been serving since her appointment in 2014. In the President's absence, it's Pérez who will call the council meetings to order, continuing her stretch of public service that included her 2020 term as City Council President. Alberson and Pérez will assume their respective roles when the calendar flips to January 2025, as described on the City of Renton's official communication channels.
