In a bid to revamp the skies, JetBlue Airways CEO Joanna Geraghty has made a direct appeal to President-elect Donald Trump, calling on the incoming administration to strengthen the nation's air traffic control (ATC) system, which has seen increased strains due to outdated technology and staffing shortages, as reported by Investing.com.
During her appearance on Bloomberg Television, Geraghty highlighted the current woes of the industry, describing the nation as "grossly understaffed" in air traffic controllers while the demand for air travel rebounds, pushing for a more resilient ATC system, but she also mentioned that she has not yet engaged with Trump's team, according to an interview obtained by Crain's New York Business. The fallout from the pandemic has been particularly acute, resulting in hiring freezes and a wave of retirements that exacerbated these pressures.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did respond to the crisis with a substantial recruiting push hiring 1,811 controllers this year, the most significant effort to replenish its ranks in nearly a decade. This recruitment drive marks a critical juncture for the agency's bid to build a workforce capable of handling the complexity and volume of modern air traffic, per Crain's New York Business.
Geraghty remains hopeful, pushing for continued progress, "I’d love to see more hiring, better technology and ultimately improving the amount of delays that come out of air traffic control," she said in the Bloomberg Television appearance, but the reality of operational setbacks continues to plague airlines, especially in high-traffic regions such as New York where JetBlue's operations are significantly concentrated, as reported by Crain's New York Business.
