Last week, two firefighters from Comstock Township were hurt on I-94 while responding to a crash. A box truck hit emergency vehicles at the scene. The firefighters, who initially seemed fine, later went to the hospital—one with a wrist injury and the other with a back injury, as detailed by FOX 17.
Dash camera footage shows a box truck losing control and hitting a police cruiser and three fire department vehicles. Firefighters moved to safety as debris spread across the highway. The truck driver may face charges, depending on the ongoing investigation by the sheriff's office and Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division, according to MLive.
In June 2017, Comstock Fire and Rescue Chief Edward Switalski was killed by a distracted driver on I-94. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Thompson recently described a similar situation as "pretty terrifying" when he didn't know where his firefighters were after a crash on the same road. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are reminding drivers to slow down, give space to emergency workers, and drive carefully, especially in bad weather. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and authorities continue to emphasize road safety, as reported by WOOD TV.
