The Kent County Animal Shelter is dealing with a rise in dog intakes and longer stays, and is asking the community to adopt or foster pets. Starting next month, the shelter will begin a flooring replacement project, reducing kennel space from 79 to 40. The renovation is needed to meet state standards. As shelter director Angela Hollinshead explained, "We have several spots in the building where the floor has failed to do that, which is prompting the renovation," according to WOODTV.
The shelter on Fuller Avenue in Grand Rapids is moving to a smaller building while it’s being renovated. The new space can hold fewer animals, especially larger dogs and cats. This may make it harder for the shelter to take in owner-surrendered pets. To help, the Bissell Foundation is lowering dog adoption fees to $50 until the end of the year, as stated by WWMT.
The Kent County Animal Shelter in Grand Rapids is encouraging adoptions and fosters as the holiday season makes it harder to find homes for pets. They’re offering a special adoption package that includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip, vaccines, a heartworm test, and a QR dog license. For those who can’t adopt, fostering is a great option, with the shelter providing all supplies and care. The shelter also upholds a no-euthanasia policy for healthy, adoptable animals, no matter how long they stay. For more details, visit the shelter’s website or contact them directly, as MLive reported.
