Kevin McCarty was sworn in as Sacramento's 57th mayor on Tuesday. He plans to focus on homelessness, public safety, and fair city services. The ceremony, attended by family, friends, and supporters, included outgoing Mayor Darrell Steinberg handing over the gavel, according to ABC10.
During his swearing-in, McCarty reflected on his late mother's legacy, noting the year of her birth in connection to his election victory. "They said you won this election by 1,941 votes," McCarty said. "And I said, of course, I did. That's the year she was born." He then discussed the city's projected $77 million budget shortfall and the ongoing decision about the future of City Manager Howard Chan, who earns over $500,000 annually, noted by ABC10.
New councilmembers Roger Dickinson and Phil Pluckebaum were sworn in for Districts 2 and 4, joining reelected members Eric Guerra and Mai Vang of Districts 6 and 8. After the ceremony, Mayor McCarty announced a 90-day listening tour to connect with Sacramento’s communities. One of the first tasks for the new council is deciding whether to extend City Manager Howard Chan’s contract, which ends this month. McCarty said, "I am your mayor as well," as reported by FOX40 and ABC10.
