The City of Kirkland is preparing residents for the upcoming challenges of the new year. The next City Council meeting will take place on January 7, 2025, following the holiday break, according to the City of Kirkland website.
With forecasts predicting inclement weather, Puget Sound Energy is urging residents to prepare for possible power outages. The utility company advises residents to equip emergency kits, insulate homes, and keep a safe distance from downed power lines, reporting them to authorities immediately.
Citizens are encouraged to consider sustainability in their post-Christmas clean-up by recycling holiday decorations, greeting cards, and used textiles. Waste Management’s ReTRN program has helped divert significant textile waste from local landfills.
Undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees can be composted if placed beside waste carts during the first two weeks of January. For New Year’s celebrations, public transportation options, including King County Metro and Sound Transit, will be fare-free.
Pet owners are reminded to ensure their pets are safe during the winter, with advice on paw care and providing warm shelter. Those using space heaters are advised to follow safety guidelines to avoid potential hazards.
The City of Kirkland also prepares for infrastructure improvements, including a weekend closure of NE 85th St at I405 in January. Residents are advised to plan alternative routes. City Hall will host events, including a blood donation opportunity on January 15 and 16 and business advising sessions on January 8.
