Art enthusiasts and the tech-curious have a new reason to flock to Kissimmee Lakefront Park, thanks to a pioneering project that merges public art with augmented reality (AR). The Downtown Kissimmee Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), alongside Osceola Arts and Snap! Orlando has launched what they're calling the city's first foray into AR art installations.
The project is part of Snap's City Unseen initiative! Orlando takes traditional murals into the digital domain. With the City Unseen mobile app, visitors can witness murals spring to life with 3D animations and soundscapes, creating an engaging, interactive experience. It's the latest effort by the Downtown Kissimmee CRA to marry public art with technology and, by extension, draw a digital line in the sand for cultural innovation in the area.
There are two installations ripe for exploration. "Tranquility Tree," by Jaime Margary, is stationed at the American Legion Post 10, while "Silv[AR] Clouds," by Matthew Swenson, can be found near the marina. By downloading the mobile app, visitors can unlock these artworks' virtual layers, thus opening a window to an art experience that's more than just a feast for the eyes—a virtual adventure.
According to the City of Kissimmee's official news release, this initiative is part of a strategic move to "enhance the vibrant atmosphere of Downtown Kissimmee and Kissimmee Lakefront Park." It's an open invitation for the public to interact with these works and witness how art can transcend its static state and become a dynamic force in the community.
The City Unseen app is available for Android and iOS devices, ensuring a wide range of smartphones can bring these installations to virtual life.
