
The skies over Knoxville were gray, with temperatures near freezing. The National Weather Service in Knoxville reported overcast conditions and calm winds. By mid-morning, forecasts called for gradual clearing, with temperatures rising to a high near 37 degrees, accompanied by a north wind at 5 mph before becoming calm later in the day.
With the night expected to be mostly clear, temperatures were slated to dip to around 22 degrees. In an advisory, the NWS cautioned that "Icy roads will be possible across the mountains and portions of northeast Tennessee that received accumulating snow this morning." The light snowfall, leaving a dusting to half an inch, may have resulted in patches of black ice and snow-covered roads, particularly on secondary roads and bridges. The service recommended increased caution during morning travels but optimistically noted that "increasing sunshine and warming temperatures should result in gradual improvement by mid- morning."
Looking ahead, the NWS provided a detailed forecast for the subsequent days. Wednesday was set to be sunny with a high near 49 degrees, followed by a frontal passage on Thursday dropping temperatures significantly. Friday morning will bring very cold conditions. "Any amount of wind will cause wind chills to drop into the single digits to near zero across the higher elevations with wind chill values in the teens across much of the lower elevations," according to the National Weather Service.
The second half of the week will bring clearer skies and highs in the upper 30s to mid-40s, but Sunday night will likely bring showers with a 60% chance of rain.
