Commuters on the Long Island Rail Road faced significant delays this morning due to a switch problem at Jamaica Station. As confirmed by CBS News, delays of 30 to 45 minutes were reported on all main line trains. The issue brought trains to a holding position and suspended service in both directions at approximately 7:08 a.m.

An update from the LIRR indicated that while trains have been restored, they were still running with residual delays. Passengers were advised to find alternate means of travel, and in a bid to alleviate some of the morning's stress, subways were cross honoring tickets between Jamaica and Penn Station Grand Central on the E, F, and 7 trains to quickly help connect stranded commuters.

The MTA acknowledged that customers should be prepared for not just additional delays but some cancellations as well, according to NY1. This inconvenience comes on the heels of a difficult week for the transportation system, which was marked by slowdowns, suspensions, and a Con Edison power outage, resulting in severe service disruptions.

On top of the LIRR complications, the MTA also reported that several subway lines, including the A, B, C, D, N, R, and W, were experiencing their own set of delays as of 7:30 a.m., though these were not related to the LIRR's switch problems. Following the week's transportation woes, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans to direct a comprehensive review to be jointly conducted by the MTA and Con Edison to thoroughly understand the cascade of disruptions.
