Los Angeles residents are likely to experience quite the mix of elements this holiday season as an impending combination of rainy weather and compromised air quality sets the stage. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 60% chance of rain today — mostly between 10 AM and 4 PM — with less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation expected. Though clouds may give way to the sun later in the day, with highs near 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the south wind could gust up to 15 mph. The Christmas Day forecast promises clearer skies and a mild high around 65 degrees, a respite for those stepping out for holiday festivities.
In a statement that accompanied the meteorological dance, South Coast AQMD has issued a mandatory wood-burning ban under an air quality alert in effect until midnight Tuesday night, aiming to protect the health of residents against increased levels of fine particle pollution. This is pertinent to those residing in the South Coast Air Basin, which consists of Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Exemptions are made for certain areas and households based on altitude, economic status, and accessibility to alternate sources of heat.
The air quality alert stipulates that "Particles in smoke can get deep into the lungs and cause health problems," such as asthma attacks and potentially increased hospitalizations, as stated by the NWS Air Quality Alert. With expectations of high fine particle pollution levels, the alert serves to forewarn the public of days when the air they breathe is likely to rapidly erode the quiet sanctuary of good health. Residents in affected areas are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible, utilizing air conditioners and air purifiers but avoiding the use of devices like whole-house fans, which draw in outside air.
