Commuters in Seattle experienced significant delays on Friday after a seven-car crash blocked all westbound lanes on State Route 520 near Montlake Boulevard. The Washington Department of Transportation alerted the public to the major crash at approximately 6:15 p.m., urging drivers to seek alternative routes due to the congestion, as reported by KIRO7.
According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the pileup was initiated by a black Jaguar that struck six other vehicles before coming to a halt in the second lane. Found in disarray, the other cars were spread across the other lanes. Seattle Fire Department teams worked to extricate two individuals from separate vehicles who were subsequently hospitalized, with a 42-year-old man in serious condition transported to Harborview Medical Center and an adult woman in stable condition, KING5 reported.
The collision's proximity to a King County Metro bus carrying several passengers added to the initial alarm; however, a spokesperson clarified that the bus was not involved in the pileup. Although Seattle Fire evaluated nine bus passengers, all declined further medical treatment. In total, five individuals were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The WSP stated that a medical emergency was the cause of the crash, not drugs or alcohol, according to a KIRO7 article.
Traffic cameras captured the scene, showing vehicles splayed across the highway as traffic backed up during the peak evening commute. WSDOT utilized social media to keep the public informed, posting updates including video evidence of the traffic jam. After lengthy delays, the lanes were eventually reopened to traffic at 9:48 p.m., three hours and 34 minutes after the initial announcement of the closure, as noted by WSDOT in posts covered by KOMO News.
While the Washington State Patrol continues their investigation of the exact dynamics behind the collision, commuters are reminded of the unpredictable nature of driving, the proximity of danger in the routine commute, and the necessity for attentiveness behind the wheel. The incident has prompted discussions among local authorities considering strategies to enhance road safety and emergency responses to efficiently manage similar events in the future.
