An early morning fire on Christmas Eve in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest D.C. has tragically resulted in the death of a man. According to fire officials, the blaze appears to have been spurred by debris from a self-installed chimney in the residence. FOX 5 DC reports that the fire was called in before 1 a.m. Tuesday, and upon the first responders' arrival, they found the man with no signs of life.
Authorities believe that the victim might have been attempting to put out the fire when he succumbed to the flames. D.C. Fire Marshal Ed Kauffman emphasized the importance of fire safety, stating, "We want people to understand fire safety, especially around this time of the year – to practice cooking safety, to understand the use, proper use of extension cords and power strips, essentially keep an eye on them. Not to overuse, not to overload them," as per FOX 5 DC.
The fire was contained to the first floor of the house around the fireplace and was significant enough to cause the man's death. "This is a very sad morning, it’s Christmas Eve morning, and we lost a life in a fire, and we don’t want to see that happen anymore," D.C. Fire Department’s Chief Communications Officer Noah Gray said in a statement provided to WTOP. In response, department members went door to door in the neighborhood as part of its “return to scene initiative” to perform home safety inspections and ensure residences have working smoke alarms.
Residents in the area have been left shocked and saddened. Kim Hubbard, who lives next door, told 7 News, "If we were asleep, it would have been us." She further highlighted the gravity of the situation, expressing how close they came to being victims of a similar fate.
