The Manhattan Beach Police Department released its weekly crime summary with a snapshot of incidents between November 27 and December 4, showing urban life that's not immune to breaches of peace and sanctity. In total, there were 686 calls for service, leading to 15 arrests and 15 traffic collisions reported. Of the calls for service, 252 were dispatched while the remaining were officer-initiated contacts.
In a notable event, on November 29 at around 8:51 P.M., officers responded to an in-progress residential burglary on the 600 block of 9th Street. The burglars smashed the first-floor rear glass door but fled upon police arrival. A high-speed getaway ensued, with law enforcement unable to catch the offenders. Later, a backpack containing a WIFI jammer was discovered, seemingly discarded on the suspects’ escape route, although the victim confirmed that no items were stolen.
The department's crime digest further noted a separate burglary incident where, on November 30, a broken glass panel was found on a bedroom window of a front house in the 1100 block of 5th Street. Surveillance footage spotted two suspects lurking on the property late in the evening the day before the discovery, but there were no conclusive signs of their having entered the residence.
Highlighting proactive policing, last Sunday, a routine traffic stop on Rosecrans Avenue led to a chance discovery. A consented search of the vehicle unearthed a loaded 9mm firearm in possession of the passenger, who happened to be a convicted felon. The individual was promptly apprehended for felon in possession of a firearm among other charges. Collective vigilance is all the more critical in this season of festivities, and the Manhattan Beach Police Department is offering holiday crime prevention tips to the community. Tips include not broadcasting travel plans on social media, utilizing alarm and surveillance systems effectively, thoughtful package delivery arrangements, and being alert in public spaces.
MBPD will continue to engage with the community, extending an invitation to residents to register their bikes at a booth on Sunday at the fireworks show.
