Last night's disappointment was palpable as Mariah Carey, the diva of the holiday season, unceremoniously scrapped her "Christmas Time" concert mere hours before she was slated to take the stage at Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena. The songstress took to social media to expound on her ill health, stating, "Pittsburgh, I am sorry to say, I've come down with the flu. It breaks my heart that I unfortunately have to cancel tonight's show. I love you all so much," as reported by WPXI.
Heartbreak and frustration ensued among fans eager to get into the festive spirit at Carey's concert effortlessly. Many attendees found out about the cancellation only upon arrival, greeted by signs rather than the expected festive celebration. The Mozzillo family from Youngstown, Ohio, regretfully shared with WTAE, "We didn’t get anything telling us that it was cancelled. We didn’t know until we arrived and we saw a paper you know when you get to the entry to get your ticket for it there was a paper taped on."
According to a statement on Ticketmaster's website, all tickets for the canceled show will be automatically refunded, with funds supposedly landing back in accounts within two to three weeks. This is a scant consolation for fans like Natalie Jaskowski, who, along with 13 family members, had the rug pulled out from under their holiday plans. Jaskowski said, per WPXI, "Does anybody else’s ticket now say canceled and so my cousin looked online and she said oh my gosh mine says that too. It didn’t last night I checked our seats."
In the meantime, Mariah Carey's perennially adored holiday anthem, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," has climbed back to No. 1 on the Billboard chart, in stark contrast to the disappointment felt by her Pittsburgh fans. The tour is eagerly supposed to resume Friday night in Newark, New Jersey, provided the star swiftly recovers.
