In the spirit of post-holiday cleanup, the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management is rolling out two temporary drop-off sites for Christmas trees starting today, in Kīhei and Makawao. These are additions to Maui County's ongoing green waste drop-off services, aimed at helping residents dispose of their festive firs and pines in an environmentally-friendly way. According to the official announcement, trees shorn of their ornaments and tinsel can be dropped off through January 5.

The temporary drop-off spots are the Kīhei Recycling Center, open daily, and the Makawao Recycling Center, which will keep doors open Monday to Sunday both operating from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the department reminds residents that ditching Christmas trees in unpermitted areas isn't just frowned upon, it's against the law and they can become a fire hazard, if not discarded properly.

For those who might miss the specific tree drop-off windows, the county's green waste services remain available at several locations. Among them, the Central Maui Landfill, Olowalu Recycling and Refuse Convenience Center, Hāna Landfill, Lāna'i Landfill, and the Moloka'i-Nā'iwa Landfill & Recycling Center all welcome green waste, with varying hours and days of operation. These services underline the county's commitment to sustainable waste management practices.

Questions about tree disposal and green waste can be directed to the Recycling Office. The administration has provided a hotline at (808) 270-7880 and encourages visits to their website for more detailed information on services and operations, ensuring residents have ample resource to close out the holiday season responsibly.
