In an update on the recovery efforts in Lahaina, the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has confirmed a restructuring of security operations within the designated commercial bubble of the Lahaina Impact Zone. As per an official announcement on the county’s website, this adjustment in security measures, set to take effect on Tuesday, is part of a concerted effort to aid the ongoing cleanup and rebuilding activities in an area still grappling with the aftermath of recent events.
According to the details provided by MEMA, the security changes involve a reduction of security checkpoints from nine to four which aims to facilitate the movement in the zone while ensuring that the recovery processes are not impeded, and this transition is set to happen just as a new shift of security personnel takes the helm; furthermore, four of the existing checkpoints will be relocated to areas that include Front Street and Pāpalaua Street, Lahainaluna Road and Luakini Street, Prison Street and Luakini Street, and the Front Street section by Kamehameha Iki Park driveway. The agency also emphasized that despite the decrease in checkpoints, stringent measures remain crucial for maintaining law and order within the still-vulnerable commercial bubble.
Another integral part of these realignments are the hard barricades; MEMA has decided to keep the hard barricades on the makai side of Honoapiʻilani Highway at Pāpalaua, Dickenson, and Prison street intersections with no changes to their placements, motorists will still be able to navigate through the Lahainaluna Road and Shaw Street intersections, and to further bolster the safety of non-vehicular traffic especially during nighttime conditions, light towers will be installed at the remaining checkpoints, the County Department of Public Works (DPW) has also been actively installing new signage to help direct local traffic and apprise residents and visitors of the updated road conditions.
