Maui's beloved Hamakua Poko Kai Beach, or what locals affectionately refer to as "Bones Beach," has been temporarily closed off to the public, effective immediately through January 31. The reasons are environmental and cultural assessments are intensely underway after recent high surf events have left their mark, causing significant erosion and potential safety hazards for beachgoers. This closure, announced by the County of Maui, underscores an increasing concern for both public access and ecological preservation.
A collaborative effort is now in full swing, as the County of Maui Department of ‘Ōiwi Resources has joined hands with the State of Hawaiʻi Historic Preservation Division and other pertinent agencies. Their mission is to carefully evaluate the area to ensure compliance with state laws concerned with preserving sensitive cultural sites along the strikingly beautiful, yet now vulnerable, coastal expanse. With the recent erosive events, the need to closely monitor and potentially intervene has become all the more crucial. According to the notice released by Maui County, the public is urged "to stay away from the beach" — a precaution intended to protect both the historical significance of the site and the well-being of its visitors.
While the sounds of crashing waves and the scent of salt air may be missed by frequent visitors of Hamakua Poko Kai, ensuring the integrity of the site takes precedence. County Department of Parks and Recreation workers have been designated to keep watch over the space, deterring curious bypassers and ensuring the ongoing studies are not disturbed. This surveillance is crucial in upholding the protection efforts while evaluations are conducted.
As the community anticipates the return to their beloved shoreline retreat, the County's approach is one of caution and thoroughness. The notice also made clear that attempts to disturb or move any items around the beach area are highly discouraged. Once the assessment concludes, officials are prepared to make informed decisions about any potential, further closures. "Determination of any additional future closures of the beach will be made following completion of assessments," the Maui County statement reads.
