Mayor Muriel Bowser will officially open the new Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center in Ward 7 today, signifying a significant enhancement to the community's recreational infrastructure. This event will take place at 11 am, joined by city officials and members of the community. According to details released by the mayor's office, the center extends over 37,000 square feet and offers comprehensive facilities designed to accommodate individuals of all ages and differing abilities on its expansive grounds. The project, costing $40.4 million, aims to become the premier destination for therapeutic recreation in the area.
Considering the diverse needs of its patrons, the center will feature various amenities including therapy and wellness rooms, a sensory room, and a therapeutic pool and spa. Moreover, the facility is to be equipped with a full-size gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, and tailored spaces like a senior lounge, tech lounge, and a caregiver space. Emphasizing inclusivity, the development also includes age-specific playgrounds, each complete with shade canopies, and additional assets such as a splash pad, community garden, sensory garden, and geocaching station. These are complemented by walking paths and open spaces to likely drive community engagement and leisure activities, as detailed on the official announcement.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will host prominent figures including Mayor Bowser, Department of Parks and Recreation Director Thenie Freeman, Department of General Services Director Delano Hunter, and Department of Aging and Community Living Director Charon P.W. Hines. Also present will be Carol Cunningham, the sister of Joy Evans, after whom the recreation center is named. Press interested in covering the event have been asked to RSVP, and a live feed will be provided through various platforms, ensuring the event is accessible for those unable to attend in person.
