Mayor Eric L. Johnson recently delivered his 2024 State of the City Address, outlining numerous achievements and plans for the City of Dallas. Focusing on public safety, parks, potholes, and property tax relief, Johnson emphasized the city's strong momentum and dedication to being a city of opportunity for all. According to the full text of his address, the city has seen a significant decline in violent crime, substantial investment in parks and infrastructure, and the largest single-year property tax rate reduction in Dallas's history.
Johnson highlighted that Dallas has achieved its fourth consecutive year of falling violent crime, with homicides down by nearly 30% from the previous year since implementing the Violent Crime Reduction Plan. "In fact, Dallas stands proudly as one of the safest major cities in America," he said, per the City of Dallas press release, attributing much of this success to the city's police force. With an eye toward future public safety, Dallas lost a sworn protector, Officer Darron Burks. Recounting a hero's sacrifice on August 29, Johnson reminded listeners of the personal toll within the line of duty.
Regarding urban greenery, Johnson boasted about an unprecedented investment through the city's 2024 Bond Program. "Dallas doubled down on its commitment to parks with an historic 345 million dollar investment," he declared, as detailed by the city's press release. This financial push aims to add parks throughout the city and ensure all Dallas residents have quality green spaces within reach. The mayor took pride in Dallas having the best park system in Texas and expressed aspirations to lead the nation.
The attention then shifted to infrastructure, where Dallas's commitment to improving streets was evident alongside the celebrated drop in violent crime. Investing 520 million dollars in street enhancements through the 2024 Bond Program, Johnson seemed to assure taxpayers that smoother roads were on the horizon, alluding to increased connectivity and access without the anxiety of pothole-induced vehicular damage. On the economic front, Johnson observed, the Dallas economy is flourishing, with Dallas recognized as a leading financial capital and host to various international trade opportunities.
