Medford's Downtown Wayfinding Project is on track to completion, promising a new wave of accessibility for the city's inhabitants and visitors. The endeavor spawned from a collective push during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is now seeing the fruits of its labor come into view with the recent installations of phase 1 signage.
The advisory committee met in December 2020 to devise a Wayfinding Plan, calling upon MERJE—a design firm known for its national portfolio—to create the sign designs. With a nod from the City Council in March 2022, the planning stage was funded by both the Planning Department and the Community Initiative Fund, as reported by the City of Medford's Official Website.
Breaking ground earlier this month, the main signs were anchored firmly into the ground, with a few left to be installed by the end of the month. Seventeen new signs, including parking and destination indicators, a bilingual walk-up kiosk at Vogel Plaza, wall panels, and several pedestrian signs, are slated to dot the downtown landscape. These new additions aim to direct and connect the space, creating a seamless downtown experience for all who tread its paths.
