Averted crisis: Cancer patients insured by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will not face out-of-network fees at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center after Anthem and the center reached an agreement. Without this agreement, patients might have encountered out-of-network costs for care at one of the nation's top cancer treatment centers starting March 1, 2025. Speaking to the critical nature of this deal, MSK President and CEO Dr. Selwyn Vickers said, "The deal will ensure about 22,000 active patients can continue uninterrupted treatment and care at MSK," according to a report by Lohud.
The financial details of the multi-year agreement hatched between Anthem and MSK, a Manhattan-based entity with outreach across New York and neighboring areas, remain under wraps, shrouded by confidentiality agreements. What is known, however, is that Anthem’s employer-based, Medicaid, and Essential Plan health plan members now have their access to in-network rates maintained, as highlighted in a Crain's New York report.
The stakes were high for many, including Carrie Regan, a middle-school teacher from Pine Bush who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year. Her experience reflects the personal impact these negotiations had on thousands of individuals: "This could be the hill that I die on, literally and figuratively," Regan told Lohud. "It's a matter of life and death." Without an agreement, patients like Regan would have risked losing access to their established care teams and faced potential financial challenges.
During the negotiations, MSK advocated for higher reimbursement rates, stating that its rates were lower compared to other NYC providers, while Anthem raised concerns about the proposed increases. Ultimately, both parties reached a compromise, securing continued partnership and coverage for Anthem’s members requiring cancer care.
Dr. Jeffrey Drebin of MSK took the argument for higher reimbursement rates further, citing statistics suggesting MSK's care efficiency. "MSK boasts 25% fewer inpatient admissions and 76% fewer outpatient encounters per patient over the course of their treatment compared to other providers," Drebin detailed in a comment relayed by Lohud. By highlighting the life-saving and cost-effective aspects of their healthcare services, MSK positioned itself as a significant player in the specialized care market, a position now secured through the recently finalized Anthem contract.
