A Memphis man has been found guilty of the murder of his wife during what was meant to be a romantic honeymoon in Fiji, according to reports from several news outlets. Bradley Robert Dawson was convicted by a Fijian court for the death of his wife, Christe Chen Dawson, more than two years after the tragic incident occurred.
Justice Riyaz Hamza, presiding over the case, commented that Dawson's possession of his passport and personal items at the time of his arrest was indicative of an intent to quickly flee the scene of the crime. "Having analyzed all the evidence in its totality, I am of the opinion that the prosecution witnesses were all truthful, credible, and reliable in their testimony. From the totality of the evidence, I am satisfied that the prosecution has disapproved of the defense of provocation. Having considered all the evidence in its totality, I am of the opinion that the prosecution has proved the charge of murder against the accused beyond reasonable doubt," Justice Hamza stated, as quoted by WREG News.
The couple was staying at the exclusive Turtle Island Resort, a location known for its privacy and luxury, catering to a limited number of couples. The Fijian getaway became the backdrop of a nefarious act that ended the life of Christe Chen Dawson, who had just graduated from the University of Tennessee Health and Science Center, and was working as a pharmacist at Kroger at the time of her death. Her family, stricken with grief, made the painful decision to cremate her in Fiji due to the extent of her injuries.
Evidence brought to light in the trial included details of the couple having been heard arguing the night before Christe's death. Ronald Gordan, a lawyer representing the Chen family, disclosed to FOX13 Memphis that after the alleged dispute, Dawson was said to have fled on a kayak to another island, importantly taking his wallet but leaving behind his phone and GPS watch. Christe was found the following evening, succumbed to blunt trauma wounds to her head.
The conviction comes after a diligent investigation and a thorough examination of the testimonies and evidence. Bradley Dawson's sentencing is scheduled for January 27, 2025. Meanwhile, the community on Elzey Avenue in Cooper-Young, where the Dawsons lived, remains in shock over the undeniably tragic turn of events that transformed a honeymoon into a harrowing crime scene, as reported by Action News 5.
