The City of Mexia celebrates its new designation as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, a recognition announced by Governor Greg Abbott. This title follows Mexia's successful completion of the certification process through the Texas Music Office's (TMO) program, which is designed to promote music industry-driven economic growth and job creation in Texas cities.
Abbott praised the community: "Congratulations to the City of Mexia on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation." The governor highlighted the $26 billion annual injection and over 192,000 jobs the Texas music industry pumps into the state economy. A statement obtained by Gov. Texas' official website captures Abbott affirming, "Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state."
Senator Charles Schwertner congratulated the city, anticipating that the title would attract increased attention and celebrate the community's strong appreciation for music. "This designation recognizes Mexia’s rich musical history and will provide the opportunity to share the community and their love of music with neighbors and visitors alike,” said Schwertner, according to a press release from the Texas Governor's website.
Mexia Downtown President and local business owner Mitzi Eves projected the honor as a gateway to greater local artistic and community-driven musical events, putting Mexia on the cultural map. In an interview with Gov. Texas, Eves reminisces about The Cowboy Western Club, an iconic venue which saw performances by stars such as Willie Nelson and George Strait. "What an honor for Mexia to be recognized," Eves mentioned, "as a Music Friendly Texas Certified community,” as per the press release.
The certification ceremonies will take place downtown, highlighting Mexia's historic connections to influential musicians such as songwriter Cindy Walker, while also marking a future filled with opportunities for local talent and greater community involvement. Gini Mascorro, TMO Community Relations and Outreach Specialist, will present the prestigious designation at the event. Additional details about the celebration can be obtained from the Mexia Economic Development Corporation, with inquiries directed to Interim Director, Stacey Bush.
Mexia is now one of 71 communities recognized for its commitment to music industry development. Since 1990, the Texas Music Office has highlighted the role of music in supporting economic and cultural growth, helping communities across the state benefit from the music industry.
