As the holiday season ends, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reminds residents to stay alert for scams and offers guidance on reporting fraud. The Consumer Protection Team allows consumers to file complaints online, by fax, or by mail to address suspicious business practices, according to the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

"Each year, our Consumer Protection Team helps Michigan consumers by mediating complaints that fall within our jurisdiction," said Nessel. Consumers can file a complaint easily through the Department of Attorney General’s online form, receiving a file number after submission. Processing may take several weeks due to high volume. Complaints and documents become part of the public record and may be disclosed under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, shared with the business involved, or used by other government agencies. In some cases, complaints may also lead to legal action, as stated by the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

To protect privacy, the Consumer Protection Team recommends submitting copies of documents, not originals, and avoiding sensitive information unless necessary. If sensitive details must be shared, mail them with clear identification. Complaints may not be handled directly by the Attorney General, so use the Complaint Directory to find the right agency. Contact the Consumer Protection Team by mail (P.O. Box 30213, Lansing, MI 48909), phone (517-335-7599), fax (517-241-3771), or toll-free (877-765-8388).
