Michigan's Attorney General Dana Nessel has launched a warning salvo at four voice service providers for their roles in perpetuating robocall schemes that have pestered residents across the state. These warnings are part of a national Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force campaign to take a stand against the invasive barrage of fraudulent calls. "Voice service providers must be held responsible for the traffic on their networks," Nessel firmly stated, emphasizing the bipartisan resolve to shield consumers from these pervasive scams, as the Michigan Department of Attorney General news release reported.
The task force, comprising 51 attorneys general, dispatched warning letters to a quartet of companies - KWK Communications, Inbound Communications Inc., AKA Management, Inc., and CallVox LLC - accused of transmitting high volumes of illegal robocalls. AKA, for instance, is alleged to have routed about 12.1 million Amazon and Apple imposter robocalls in a month in 2022. These notices flag providers regarding the illegitimate nature of calls trafficking through their systems.
This crackdown follows thorough investigations by the task force into the operations of these telecommunication entities. The findings, which detail the vast scale and variety of schemes, from IRS cons to Social Security scams, have been presented to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), hinting at potential regulatory reprisals. The sheer volume of the calls is staggering, with KWK Communications allegedly routing more than 20,000 calls with spoofed numbers in just one month of 2022. Inbound Communications is accused of channeling over 28.4 million scam robocalls in a similar timeframe.
