A 52-year-old man was shot multiple times in the basement of a St. Clair Shores home late Monday night, and police say the suspected shooter is his own 77-year-old stepfather. Officers were called to the 20000 block of Paloma Street just before 9 p.m. after the victim called 911 himself, reporting that he had just been shot multiple times by someone he knew.
According to C & G Newspapers, officers responded to the home at 8:49 p.m. on August 31 and found the victim wounded in the basement. As reported by The Detroit News, the man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after officers arrived to find a brief barricade situation at the residence, near Interstate 94 and 10 Mile Road.
Suspect Called Out of the Home Without Incident
Police summoned the suspected shooter out of the residence, and he complied with their instructions, according to The Detroit News. Media reports indicate the stepfather allegedly shot and wounded his stepson following an argument, though authorities have not detailed what led to the confrontation.
The department's report on the incident notes that investigation findings from the Detective Bureau will be forwarded to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office for formal charge review, per C & G Newspapers. What Charges Could Look Like
If the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecuting Attorney Peter Lucido, authorizes charges, assault with intent to commit murder under Michigan Compiled Laws Section 750.83 carries a potential sentence of life in prison or any term of years, and requires prosecutors to prove specific intent to kill beyond a reasonable doubt, according to the Michigan Legislature. Any accompanying felony firearm charge under Michigan Compiled Laws Section 750.227b would add a mandatory two-year prison term for a first offense, one that must be served consecutively to — and before — any sentence for the underlying felony.
Criminal cases originating in St. Clair Shores are first processed at the 40th District Court, under Judges Mark A. Fratarcangeli and Joseph Craigen Oster, before felony cases are bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens. No charges had been announced as of this reporting.

Still, this is not the first time St. Clair Shores police have been involved in a serious violent crime investigation in the region. In December, department officers assisted Shelby Township investigators in locating and surveilling a drive-by shooting suspect held on $1 million bond, who was ultimately arrested on assault with intent to murder charges. The department also maintains a K-9 Unit and Drone Unit that have assisted neighboring agencies, including a deployment to help Eastpointe police during a shooting investigation last summer.
