As temperatures drop, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding outdoor enthusiasts to stay safe this winter. With changing conditions across the state, safety remains their top priority, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
"People often get caught up in the excitement of the moment and overlook winter safety," said Lt. Tom Wanless of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He reminds people to be careful around ice, as it can be unpredictable. It’s important to dress in layers, check weather and road conditions, and bring gear like flashlights and ice picks. Personal flotation devices are also essential near the ice. For snowmobilers, those aged 12 to 16 need a safety certificate, and everyone should follow the Ride Right rules to ride sober, at safe speeds, and on the correct side of trails. There were 19 fatal snowmobile accidents in Michigan in the 2022-23 season, but that number dropped to 4 in 2023-24.
Wanless emphasizes staying hydrated, having snacks, and never going out alone during winter activities. He also recommends telling someone your plans and carrying a reliable communication device. His main advice is: "Take an honest assessment of your health – if you’re not feeling well, don’t go out." This helps prevent accidents, which is a priority for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
