Snohomish County is preparing to welcome new leadership in economic development as Mike Fong steps in as Executive Director on January 6, 2025. Fong, with an expansive background in public service, intends to leverage his experience at various governmental levels to catalyze business growth and foster a dynamic workforce in the region. His resume boasts positions such as Director for the Washington State Department of Commerce and roles within the Small Business Administration, as mentioned in an announcement from Snohomish County.

During his tenure with the Washington State Department of Commerce, Fong managed an $8 billion budget and led a staff of nearly 800. He's credited with launching initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability and growth of small businesses, as well as increasing investments in affordable housing and clean energy. These efforts have not gone unnoticed. "I want to express my gratitude to Mike for his leadership and service over the past 20 months," said Governor Jay Inslee, as reported by the county's official website. This selection marks Fong's second term with the county after having coordinated the distribution of $160 million in federal ARPA funds.

County Executive Dave Somers expressed his confidence in Fong, noting his blend of compassion and leadership skills. "Mike Fong has the rare ability to combine compassion and strong leadership in everything he does, and he genuinely strives to help individuals, families, and communities thrive," Somers said, according to Snohomish County. With aims to capitalize on aerospace, agriculture, and advancements in technology and sustainable energy, Somers sees Fong as the right person to lead and innovate in these sectors.

Fong's return is timely, as Snohomish County faces new opportunities for growth and revival. "This region has such an incredibly diverse, dynamic, and resilient economy, and that presents unique opportunities to support innovation, create jobs, grow existing businesses, and launch new startups," Fong told Snohomish County, voicing his eagerness to commence this critical work. He is set to replace Neepaporn “A” Boungjaktha, who is slated to join the Port of Seattle following their last day on January 2, 2025.

In addition to his executive roles, Fong's public service track includes being Seattle's deputy mayor and King County's Chief Operating Officer. An alumnus of the University of Washington, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and is recognized for his civic efforts, including the International Examiner’s Community Voice Award. Fong is fluent in Cantonese and actively volunteers in his community, demonstrating his commitment not only to economic progress but also to cultural and social enrichment.
