In a move that enlivens a storied high school football program, Mike Warfield has circled back to the helm of the Aliquippa Quips after a season on the sidelines. His leave, which only lasted through the 2024 season, now ends as he reclaims his position as head coach—a role in which he has already carved out a legacy of success.
Citing personal reasons earlier this year, Warfield had stepped away, calling it a "short recess," according to WPXI. The break came on the heels of a historic run, where the Quips dominated with a 60-14 victory over Dallas, rounding off their first flawless season with a 4A PIAA state championship. Under his tenure, Warfield chalked up an impressive 74-6 record alongside four WPIAL titles and three state championships.
During Warfield's absence, Vashawn Patrick, previously an assistant coach, stepped into the role and directed the team through a season that, while respectable, wasn't up to the high-flying standards Warfield's squads previously set. The Quips ended their 2024 campaign with a seven-win, three-loss record, starkly contrasting the unbeatable squad Warfield previously orchestrated.
"I miss the kids and the coaches," Warfield said, per CBS News Pittsburgh. His passion for the community and aspiration to contribute to the program's continued success is palpable. In his touching interview, he echoed a similar sentiment, stating, "I just want to give back to the kids, the program and the community that means so much to me!"
The Quips, who have appeared in WPIAL finals for 16 straight seasons, will be eager to recapture that long-standing tradition of excellence.
