A Mililani man, Desmond Kekahuna, was found guilty in a case of attempted murder and assault following a violent episode in a Walmart parking lot last year. According to court documents, the 48-year-old deliberately plowed his car into 39-year-old Kristelle Taliulu as she was pushing her infant in a stroller. Upon crashing into Taliulu and dragging her a distance, Kekahuna then proceeded to beat her with a tire iron, as reported by KITV.

The altercation did not end there. Zacharia Jones, a 42-year-old bystander, was assaulted while trying to aid the victim, and in the chaos, Kekahuna turned his violent rage upon him. Despite his defense's efforts to argue not guilty by reason of insanity, the plea was rejected by the court. The decision was rendered after a trial that began on Nov. 20, and on Dec. 12, Kekahuna was convicted of the charges, as KITV detailed.

While Taliulu was critically injured in the attack, her baby miraculously escaped without harm. "We want to commend the bystanders who were there. We appreciate their efforts and those of the police officers who came on scene and were finally able to detain this defendant. He is a dangerous man and the community will be safer with him behind bars for many years," said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm in a statement cited by KITV.

In the wake of Kekahuna’s conviction, he now awaits sentencing, which, for the attempted murder charge, could mean life in prison with the possibility of parole. He also faces a concurrent sentence of up to five years for the assault, his sentencing is scheduled for April 10, 2025. As Hawaii News Now reports, community members and law enforcement alike express a sense of satisfaction that justice appears to be served in this case.
