Tragedy struck a Milpitas apartment building on Tuesday, where four family members, a man, a woman, and two pre-teen children, were discovered deceased. The apartment, located in the Turing at the Fields Apartments, a luxury complex near the Great Mall, became the center of a grim investigation after police were called for a welfare check shortly before 9 p.m. According to CBS News Bay Area, the officers found the family members with "obvious signs of death."

Milpitas police said the check was prompted after relatives reported they hadn't contacted the family for several days. Residents of the building and the wider community conveyed their shock at the discovery, with one neighbor leaving a solitary bouquet outside the family's door as a somber gesture of mourning. As per ABC7 News, Savannah Rae Dizon, who works in the area, expressed her disbelief, noting, "Nothing ever really happens in Milpitas."

Emotions ran particularly high for Jerry Saldana, who lives directly above the apartment where the incident transpired. As a father himself, he found it unsettling that he was not aware that such a tragedy occurred just below his own home. Saldana told ABC7 News, "It's scary. You know. We have a family, we've got children ourselves, and to think that we're just above the unit that it happened in and not knowing any information."

At a press conference, Millbrae Police Lt. Tyler Jamison spoke, extending condolences to the family, and emphasized the support being extended to the responding officers amidst this challenging situation. "It's a very difficult incident for anyone, I mean, especially the family, like we mentioned our deepest condolences to the family. Officers are exposed to these tragic incidents on a daily basis and we just want to make sure they're provided with the necessary resources that they need to navigate through those challenges," Jamison said in a statement, as cited by CBS News Bay Area. Importantly, no previous police calls to the address had been recorded, and while the cause of death remains under investigation, there is supposedly no ongoing threat to public safety.
