A tense series of events involving the disappearance of a young child in Knoxville concluded with a sigh of relief as officials located 2-year-old Elton Bailey unharmed. The Knoxville Police Department confirmed that the toddler, who had been inside a 2002 gold Ford Explorer when it was reported stolen, was found in a muddy construction site still inside the vehicle. The situation prompted a swift response with an AMBER Alert and a multi-agency search initiative.
The ordeal began on Old State Road where the child's grandfather made a brief stop, leaving the vehicle running with Elton inside. Within moments, the SUV was missing, leading authorities to believe it had been stolen. The Knoxville Police Department, along with various other agencies, launched a large-scale search effort. According to WBIR, "It was further reported that Elton was with his grandfather, who briefly stopped at the home on Old State Road, quickly went inside the home, and left the Ford Explorer running with Elton still inside the vehicle."
The search for Elton Bailey, described by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as a toddler with blonde hair and blue eyes, resulted in an AMBER Alert being disseminated statewide. Hours into the search, relief came when the child and the Ford Explorer were found near 212 Pelham Park Road, a short distance from where the vehicle was last seen. An article by WATE noted that the Knoxville Police Department announced "at 10:16 p.m. Sunday that the child is safe and more information is forthcoming."
In the end, the Special Crimes Unit is working to piece together the circumstances that led to Elton's unintended adventure. They are investigating whether the vehicle was indeed stolen or if it had been left in gear, rolling away to its muddy resting place. As reported by WBIR, the vehicle "was still running and Elton was found safe and unharmed inside of the vehicle." The incident, while undoubtedly distressing for all involved, fortunately, resolved with no harm to the young Elton Bailey.
