A tragic collision on Highway 165 in Turlock left four people dead and two critically injured on Sunday morning. At around 9:25 a.m., a speeding Infiniti sedan driven by a 22-year-old from Modesto collided with a Jeep SUV, as reported by KCRA. The Jeep, occupied by a Turlock man and four passengers, had stopped at a stop sign on Greenway Avenue before entering the intersection and being broadsided by the Infiniti.
The impact was catastrophic. The 22-year-old driver of the Infiniti, who the California Highway Patrol noted was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. In a gut-wrenching turn of events, the 54-year-old Jeep driver and his 45-year-old front passenger were also pronounced dead at the location of the crash. A 16-year-old girl, seated in the back of the Jeep, succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the hospital. Two other passengers, a 19-year-old woman and 14-year-old boy, both from Turlock, are currently in critical condition at a local hospital. ABC10 confirmed that all Jeep passengers were wearing their seat belts during the incident.
The community suffered a secondary blow upon learning that Jennifer Lourenco, a local teacher at Sinclear Elementary School and the school's Teacher of the Year in 2023-24, was among those who perished. The Ceres Unified School District, deeply affected by the loss, said in a statement, "While we are still processing this unimaginable tragedy, our hearts go out to members of the Lourenco family and their loved ones," as obtained by ABC10. They called her "a gifted and dedicated educator and a beloved colleague whose loss will be deeply felt throughout the school community."
In the wake of the collision, counseling services are being offered to students and staff within the Ceres Unified School District. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, and it remains unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
