A Monroe County deputy was wounded in a shooting while attempting to serve a warrant, as confirmed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The incident occurred at the 2300 block of Reed Springs Road in Philadelphia around midday on Sunday, as reported by WVLT. The deputy, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and was expected to be released the same night.
Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones stated that the violence unfolded when deputies encountered a tree blocking the road, having been dispatched for what seemed a routine obstruction. However, the tree's location in front of the residence of Richard Brown, who held an active felony warrant from Loudon County, spiraled into a standoff. Brown initially came outside but retreated into the home and began making violent statements through the door, as detailed in reports from WATE.
The escalation led to the decision by deputies to breach the home after Brown ignored calls to surrender and non-lethal gas was deployed. At that moment, gunfire erupted from within the residence, wounding one deputy. Sheriff Jones emphasized in a statement that no deputies discharged their weapons during this engagement, backed by support from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Madisonville and Sweetwater Police Departments, SWAT, and the Monroe County Violent Crime Task Force.
After a protracted negotiation process, Brown surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, said Sheriff Jones. Futher details about the investigation, which is being led by the TBI, will unfold as the situation is examined more closely. The identity of the injured deputy has yet to be made public, as per WVLT.
