Early Monday morning an accident on the 5 Freeway in East Los Angeles led to an Amazon truck spilling packages across the lanes, causing traffic delays and a significant clean-up effort. According to KTLA, the crash reportedly occurred around 6:30 a.m. and involved multiple vehicles, including two big rigs. The incident not only left parcels scattered but also resulted in a damaged light pole and a diesel fuel leak from one of the trucks.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the accident and noted that it "left hundreds of packages" on the freeway, and blocked multiple southbound lanes as NBC Los Angeles reported. Although no injuries were immediately reported, the situation impacted the flow of traffic near the Ditman Avenue on-ramp, with responders estimating at least a two-hour closure for cleanup.
In the aftermath, crews used a crane to upright the overturned truck and began corralling the strewn packages. As per CBS News Los Angeles, traffic was impacted on connecting freeways, including the 710 and the northbound 5 Freeway.
As of now, the cause of the collision remains under investigation, and there has been no immediate word on any sustained injuries. "CHP officers are on scene and are working to clear the roadway and keep it safe for all motorists," the CHP stated, outlined in coverage by NBC Los Angeles.
