The cost to cross the border between Detroit and Windsor will increase with new toll rates starting in 2025. The US-side toll will go up on January 6, and the Canadian-side toll will rise on January 1. These changes were announced by American Roads, which runs the US side, and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Corporation.
Starting January 6, drivers from Detroit to Windsor will pay more in tolls. Card users will see a 75-cent increase, raising the toll to $8.25, while Nexpress users will pay $6, up from $5.50. On the Canadian side, tolls will increase on January 1, 2025, with card users paying $7.25 and Nexpress users paying $5.90. Regine Beauboeuf, CEO of American Roads, said, "The increase is necessary to allow us to plan for our future capital projects and maintain safe and efficient movement of people between the two countries." Tal Czudner, CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Corporation, added, "Over the next few years we're going to have to do a little bit more work to the ceiling, closer to the entrance of the tunnel," and "Then we're also going to have to fix up the roadway. It gets a fair amount of traffic, about 12,000 cars a day through there," as stated by CBS News and AM800CKLW.
Starting January 1, tolls at the Ambassador Bridge will increase. The fee for cars traveling from Canada to the U.S. will go up to $12 CAD, while the return trip from the U.S. to Canada will cost $9 USD. The toll at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will also rise by $0.75 to $8.25 for credit and debit card users after mid-January. These increases are to help improve the infrastructure and safety of the crossings. Drivers can save money by signing up for the Nexpress program, which gives them an RFID tag for quicker crossings. As Czudner says, "It's kind of like our frequent flyer package. So you sign up to the express account and you put some money in the account, and we issue you a little RFID tag that you could put onto your windshield, or attach to even your keys and you swipe that up as you're going through, so it's quicker and then you save a couple of bucks every time," as reported by WXYZ.
