Following September's fatal incident involving New York State Police (NYSP) and Ali Ali, New York Attorney General Letitia James has made a significant effort to ensure transparency by releasing body-worn camera footage from the encounter. The video, published by the AG's office yesterday, captures the grim sequence of events that led to Mr. Ali's death in Orange County.
Wanted for an alleged assault and driving a stolen vehicle, Mr. Ali compelled the police to engage in pursuit, which unfolded on September 18, as detailed in a report from the Attorney General's Office. After colliding with another vehicle on the New York State Thruway, Mr. Ali fled, leading to a subsequent confrontation in the woods near Trout Brook Road. Carrying a knife, Mr. Ali was shot by one pursuing trooper and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The decision to publicly share the footage results from a directive by Attorney General James to promote greater public scrutiny and trust. The released footage, while illuminating, comes with a strong content warning for disturbing images. This act by the Attorney General upholds the mandate that any officer-involved death, under Executive Law Section 70-b, triggers an assessment by the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) which may progress to a full investigation if there is indication of an officer's causative role.
"The release of this footage is not an expression of any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter or any opinion as to how or whether any individual may be charged with a crime," states the Attorney General's office release. The sharing of such content is part of an overarching strategy aimed at fostering a more transparent judicial process and relationship with the public, ensuring that the circumstances surrounding such incidences are clear and open for analysis.
