In a sobering discovery in the Bronx, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned inside a shopping bag, igniting concerns and prompting police investigations. According to an ABC7NY report, the infant was spotted on Reverend James Polite Avenue, neatly swathed in a blanket within the confines of the bag. The child was immediately taken to Jacobi Hospital where her condition was noted to be stable.
The incident that unfolded on Sunday morning took a bewildering turn as surveillance footage obtained showed an individual cloaked in a hooded jacket carefully carrying the bag down the avenue, pausing in front of several homes before finally stopping at one location and then leaving without the bag, which contained the baby girl. Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, the resident of the home outside of which the baby was left, was alerted by a neighbor who had already dialed 911, stating "there’s a baby at your door, at the entrance of your house," which Jallow confirmed in a News 12 interview.
Upon discovering the baby, Jallow recounted the infant's physical activity, observing "The baby was shaking [her] hand, blinking the eyes," further adding to News 12, he immediately brought the infant indoors and once again called emergency services, emphasizing the child's fragile and perilous situation on his doorstep. The baby, believed to be only days old, is expected to survive, an outcome that hangs in the balance of swift community and medical response.
New York State's Abandoned Infant Protection Act offers a degree of clemency to parents who surrender their newborns safely within 30 days of birth at designated safe havens, an option that underscores the presence of alternatives to outright abandonment. Donnell Warden, a neighbor and father of four, reflected a shared astonishment in the community, saying in a News 12 interview, "If the mother didn’t want the child, or whatever circumstances it was, you would think they would either give it to the opposite side of the family or do better like giving it to the police of something."
Police continue their investigation with no arrests yet made after the incident.
