The quiet of North Richland Hills was shattered last Wednesday night when gunshots claimed the life of a man inside his home. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, police were called to the 7300 block of Stonybrooke Drive, responding to reports of gunfire. They discovered 52-year-old Brian Pence struck by bullets while inside his residence. He succumbed to his injuries at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, a death the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled a homicide.
As the investigation persists, neighbors voice their anxiety, stripped of the suburban security they once knew. "I heard a 'pop pop pop pop,' and I said,' Whoa, what was that?'" a resident, Leah Wilde, recounted to CBS News. Another resident, and neighbor of the victim, Robin Moran shared, "This is a quiet, peaceful neighborhood; very little happens." However, that peace was disrupted, when gunshots tore through Pence's home as he lay in bed, while his wife was in another room.
The North Richland Hills Police Department has not yet confirmed if the incident was a drive-by shooting, but they emphasized in a statement that it appeared to be an isolated event, posing no immediate threat to the community. Still, residents are on edge, uncertain if the shooting was an act of random violence or a targeted attack.
"You can't have that false sense of security. Bad things happen everywhere; you just have to remember to be on your guard," Moran told CBS News. The community is especially concerned because many children live in the area. "I kind of want to keep them close right now," said Moran, reflecting the heightened anxiety that has taken hold among her family, and her neighbors alike.
No arrests have been announced while police continue to delve into what led to the shooting, leaving a community seeking answers and a return to the tranquility they once took for granted.
